Monday Harvest - 24 Sept 2012

My pickings at the moment reflect where we are in the season.

My second planting of winter crops is now coming into maturity. This week I picked, one decent sized cauliflower, 3 smallish heads of broccoli  (just one in this picture) and the first picking of my third crop of snow peas.


The other things I picked  reflect the start of the summer crops.

These are trimmings really rather than pickings, which will go into a salad for tonight's dinner.

I thinned my beetroot a little - you can see that the roots had started to form. I will eat these leaves.

I also took the best leaves off the celery. Do you like celery leaves in your salads?

Then I trimmed my lime green lettuce plants, snuck a little off the baby curled parsley and picked some mint.

I think this will all make a great green salad with some semi-dried tomatoes a crumble of fetta and a slick of vinaigrette.

  1. That cauliflower looks absoutely perfect. I wish I had snow peas - I forgot to sow any and am now missing them.

    1. This is a pretty good cauli, it might be tonight's dinner. I am hoping that all my things that are in now will tie me over until the move. I don't really want to have summer things in and then have to leave them behind, so I am pretending it is still winter.

  2. Beautiful harvest! The cauliflower is particularly imnpressive.

    We tend to use fresh celery leaves in soups but we also freeze them to throw into homemade stocks (rather than using celery stalks as the mira poux).

  3. Your pretty cauliflower make me regret not sowing the seeds more this year. We had only 2 this year. Like Liz I forgot to sow snow peas as well and now missing them too.

    1. Decisions about what to plant are hard, sometimes we dont have the space. But I personally cant do without snow peas in winter, they are pretty special. I might try sugar snaps next winter too.

  4. All your vegetables look fabulous - that cauliflower is amazing. I've given up on cauliflower, I just can't it and don't want to devote the space to it anymore.

    1. I must say I am very pleased with the caulis this year. Some have been very small, but most have been very good. It does take time and space cauli.... so I can understand the decision not to plant.I hope that soon space wont be a limiting factor when I move to the property. But water may be the limiter instead!

  5. You have done really well this year with the caulis and broccoli. Not bad considering you weren't here to babysit them early on :) I've been using celery leaf as a substitute for parsley in cooking while I've been out of it. The new parsley is coming on now though.
    Like Liz, I really should have planted snow peas. I've really missed them this winter. Dwarf french beans are a staple in my kitchen, so when they disappear over winter I need something to fill the gap - snow peas should really be it. Next year!

    Do you have have some time between finishing work and moving? If you have a Thursday or Friday free sometime it would be great to have some morning tea at my place before you go.

    2. November would be great. The big kids are at school on Thursdays and Fridays, so one of those days would be ideal.

  7. I remember my grandma's garden, just beautiful. Unfortunately, living in a block of flats is quite restrictive in this respect, but one can still grow some basil :)
