Fabric, aprons and more retro inspiration

Orange must be on my mind.  Perhaps it's winter and the need for a little colour.

Today I bought these orange fabrics from one of the local fabric stores in my suburb. Not sure what I am going to do with them but they were bright and cheap and the darkest one is really soft.

And more orange fabric better suited to the gardening side of my blog.  This might become a prototype gardening apron - something to slip on when you get home from work and the first thing you do is head to the patch to inspect growth, de-grub and potter.

And during the week I made two more aprons. This red and white one...

and this Australian Wildflower one...

Both aprons measurements and overall look are based on two of my wonderful retro aprons.

And I am also getting inspired by jug covers.

Here is a fabulous old one made from cotton netting, a little crochet and some aqua blue beads. Much nicer than Glad wrap hey? Might have to whip up a few in preparation for outdoor eating on warmer days.

I am contributing this to My Creative Space. My aprons are going into my little shop Cumquat.

  2. I so want that carrot fabric! Love it! Once upon a time, I did patchwork and when I 'retire' I may very well take it up again. A vegetable-themed quilt to cover my aging knees might be on the cards, one day!

    1. The bummer was that there was only 1 meter left on the roll, otherwise I would have bought more.

  3. Cumquat is a great name, and the aprons are really pretty. I wish I wore an apron but I'm too ill disciplined for such a sensible thing.

  4. The aprons are so cute and playful! I've just decided orange is one of my favorite colors, and I'm very interested in what you're going to use the fabrics for.

    1. I love orange... I have just started an apron with lots of white ric-rac out of the dark orange one but there is lots left over for something else, maybe a summer dress.

  5. The aprons are great. I can imagine picking a bunch of carrots and putting them in the carrot fabric made into an apron. I also love the name cumquat. My mum always makes cumquat jam each year it brings lots of happy memories.

    1. That's such a nice image. Unfortunately I have yet to master carrot growing! I love the sound of cumquat jam. I also fancy one day making crab apple jelly. Such old fashioned preserves - they are usually so much tarter than the overly sweet things available now.

  6. Ooo I do love the red and white spotty apron. I never do wear aprons and end being more covered in muck over the already mucky work clothes at the end of the day. I too ma looking forward to seeing the results from the carrot material.

  7. I love the old fashioned jug cover. When I was a child we used to have a cover like that for our sugar pot, but with green beads, that I always thought of as being like peas. I'd love to make one, I always thought it would be too hard, but seeing that one, just crocheted around the edge, that looks doable. I might have to try it out.

    1. Hi Kirsten, like the green beads as peas, how cute... I like this one too , much simpler than a totally crochet one. Today I went to Spotlight to source some cotton mesh like the material in this jug cover, but I could only find synthetic ones - not good enough I am afraid! If I find the right material I will make some. I agree, these look doable and will be great with the right beads. Good luck with yours. Tell me if you find some nice cotton mesh.
