Meet the girls

We have our first livestock - 4 beautiful Isa Brown chookies. They are named after some of our Grand Aunts - lovely old-fashioned names all starting with 'M'.

L-R: Myrtle, Muriel and Mavis
There is Mavis - she is a little smaller than the others and is also lighter in colour, a ginger rather than brown really.

Mavis
There is Muriel - she has a beautiful buff-coloured chest and is a little dusty in colour.

Muriel
There is Myrtle who has lovely striped feathers near her tail and her tail feathers are quite long. She seems to pick on little Mavis...

Myrtle
And then there is Myra who is a little darker in colour with no particular markings and the most adventurous. I am sure she will be the first one that will allow me to have a cuddle.

Myra
I bought them as point of lay from a free-range chicken farm Country Cacklers in Temora. They have lovely chookies of different breeds and handily bring a van of chookies to Wagga Wagga from time to time.

They had some lovely Guinea Fowl keets for sale the day I got the girls -  I am tempted, they are such lovely things guinea fowl.

I bought them as point of lay but they haven't laid yet, I guess they need some time to settle.

The girls are staying in the house for a few days before being let out to range but they have some nice views in the meantime.

  1. They're gorgeous! It's interesting how different the personalities of chickens can be, and the pecking order thing is definitely quite strong. I look forward to hearing about the first eggs!

    1. They are little personalities, you are right. Mavis seems to be prize percher, first to try them and to show the others.

  3. Must be the day for naming chooks with names begining with 'M'- Today I have finally named the 2nd of my new girls 'Maude'. Shes 'Maude in the middle'. Number 1 chook is her Mama 'Boss'- who takes on more charatistics of her namesake everyday and number 3 is 'Little One' whos been known as that for quite a while now as shes just that.

I am impressed with chook shed- should certainly keep Mr Fox at bay.

    1. I think Maude is a great chook name! I will tell my labouring lads oh your comments, I am pretty sure we will have the cunning little vixen stumped, but will we fool Anna the goanna?

    1. They had their first sfternon out of the pen and they really enjoyed it. For just a while I wondered if the two circling wedgies saw them...

  5. Sweet! Have they moulted already, do you know? Mine shed a little a while back though you couldn't tell by looking at them apart from the tail of one looking tatty.

I named my three (now two) Freckle, Speckle and Splodge but I could never remember which was which so they are collectively just 'the girls' or 'my eggy friends' now! Much easier.

  7. I'm a first time chook owner and also have four Isa's, Grace, Ginger, Ruby and Rosie, they're lovely chooks. We had our first eggs the day after we brought them home so hopefully it won't take your girls too much longer to start laying. The girls now lay between 2 and 5 eggs a day, sometimes we have so many eggs we don't know what to do with them all.

    1. Oh thanks for visiting. LOVE the names of your girlies! Mine still haven't laid yet - today I decided to put a could of round large pebbles in their nest boxes to encourage them but perhaps they are still a week or too off laying. I am so looking forward to thinking up new egg recipes.

  8. Lovely chickies! They look a lot similar to our Hy-Line chickens. We have 3 Leghorns and another native South African breed known as a Koekoek. We have 5 Hy-lines, all red, so we ringed them to tell them apart. The one who is the most red (Nicole - after Nicole Kidman :)) is very smart, she figured how to get through the cat door and we find her every now and then eating the cat's pellets! We have had chix for a year now and they are a wonderful addition to any garden. We just need to figure out what to do will all the eggs! :)
