Harvest Monday - 9 Dec '13

It's been slim but pretty pickings this week. The sunflowers have been the focus - picked both for cut flowers,


and as chook food.



As far as vegetables go I have had my first zucchini, a lovely Gold Rush from seeds provided by Nina (actually, just checked - they were from Bek)!


I've picked small amounts of borlotti beans,


and some of the last of one of the plantings of radish.


Just as well I still had a stash of broad beans and potatoes. Looks like I will soon have to head to the green grocers...sigh!

    They are gorgeous sunflowers Louise - what variety are they? Have you been underwhelmed by the yield on the borlotti beans like I have?

      The very dark ones are Prado Red and the ones with the radiating colours are Evening Sun. Both these I bought from Diggers. They have been favourites for years and years. They are mulit headed varieties - the ones I prefer. And I like the darker shades. Having said that, I am also tempted by their Moonwalker another multiheaded variety that is a very pale yellow. Otherwise If I find the need to top up I have bought varieties from Fothergills that are likewise multiheaded and darker - cant recall their names now.

      In past years I have found them the BEST gift for the hostess over Christmas functions.

      YEP! underwhelmed by the borlotti... Also underwhelmed that they seem to be being attacked from below by chaffer grubs. One day I have healthy plants, next day they are limp and pale. When I dig them up I find they have been munched off at the roots!

    The sunflowers are so cheerful! I'm so delighted to see them. My garden is a depressing sight after multiple nights of unusually freezing weather.

      Oh , I know that look. It used to depress me. When we lived in England those days in winter when the garden had all dies back were rather sad... But it is a good thing that we know that all will flourish again. In the meantime I am so glad that the sunflowers can offer a little colour for you.

      I am in Hawaii on the island of Oahu. Will they ship to me? Those are just georgous. I've never seen sunflowers so colorful.

      You can always ask. Google them, you will find them. Fancy , Hawaii! How exotic! But then I guess you might think that rural Australia is exotic?

    Lovely sunflowers. I have tried to grow them without success, but you've inspired me to try again. I like the idea of growing some of the feed grains for my ducks. Very nice zucchini. Mine are ages away...

      It's hard to keep things up over that hungry gap isn't it? I have a huge bag of home grown potatoes still to eat but that is hardly dietary variety!

    You should thank someone else for the Gold Rush, it weren't me! Credit where it's due. :) I've harvested lots of kale, silver beet, perpetual spinach, a few snow peas, different herbs, parsley and one short fat green zucchini. Not too bad, when I write it out, really.

    Great sunflowers! As for the Borlotti, I would have left them on the plant a bit longer, and use them as shelling beans. I don't rate them highly for using green.
