There are however, a few good Australian Christmas carols. My favourite is, 'The North Wind'. The first verse is the most appropriate to us at Highfield.
The North Wind
( in Southern Australia a north wind is a hot dry wind)
( in Southern Australia a north wind is a hot dry wind)
The north wind is tossing the leaves
Wind blown eucalyptus leaves |
The red dust is over the town
And the grass in the paddock is brown
The golden brown glow of the main paddock in the afternoon |
As we lift up our voices and sing
Cicarda shells left behind in their mission to sing from the tree tops |
To the Christ child, the heavenly King.
May your gardens prosper whether they are under shade cloth or a cloche.
We may get cozy by the fire in the evenings here, but the snow is fake and the sleighs have wheels, so I'm kind of with you about the cold climate holiday bias. My hillside looks like your paddock at the moment when it should be getting a lovely green. Oh well, it's the holiday season regardless of climate, and I hope that your holiday is a very merry one!
ReplyDeleteYou are right, it's not so much a hemispheric bias but a latitudinal bias! Stay cosy and let's hope your paddock greens soon. Best of the Season. See you on the other side!
DeleteGorgeous. I hope you guys have had the cool change through as well. Have a brilliant Christmas and hope the lamb is delicious. xx
ReplyDeleteThank goodness the last two days have been cooler! Best to you, yours and your gardens. Think I might post on our very lamby Christmas.
DeleteI'm more drawn to the winter solstice festival of light thing as I get older - there seems to be more of a point to it somehow. Have a lovely holiday break anyway. i'm nostalgic about summery christmases from my childhood but I can see that you might want ro mostly ignore it - Bernice x
ReplyDeleteOh you are so right... Because a lot of the imagery around Christmas is about the turning from the shortest day then it all makes so much more sense when in the colder and darker climes. When we lived in Blighty the darkness really bothered me ( I guess I had that seasonal affective disorder thingy).Anyway I always got quite down. So the lights and the snow and the cosy insideness and the heavy meals and the endless very good movies on the television always cheered me. Have a great Festive Season.
DeleteMerry Christmas Louise, hope you have a wonderful day.
ReplyDeleteThank you Jan, all the best to you and yours.
