Zucchini Tuesday - Home alone

Louise normally posts about me on Tuesday so I know you know about me. Today, she and 'the Lad' have left me here alone to fend for myself while a bushfire approaches. They have gone to Wagga Wagga and they tell me they are safe.

Fine for them! Huh! Meantime, I am stuck here along with  the odd eggplant (they are odd things aren't they?), a chilli or two and something called a padron (what is a padron I ask you?). We are fine (I think) but some others  here I am worried about. I can't see from my bed, but I think that the radishes and rocket as well as the parsley and lettuce have not made it thru the day...I'm also not sure about the pumpkins and the cucumbers.

If there is anyone out there, please hope for me that the Mate's Gully/Tarcutta fire doesn't come near here and that no other fires near here start.  It's very hot and dry so if you all think hard enough, maybe you can make it rain.

That's all for Zucchini Tuesday,
signing off,
Greenskin

A fetching photo of me looking handsome on a better day

  1. I've been away for most of the day but thinking about you, Louise, while listening to the news in the car. I googled when I got home and saw that there are fires close to where you are and jumped on-line to see how you are.

Thank goodness you are safe and very wise of you to get out. Nothing is worth risking your safety for. Sorry, Greenskin, not even you!!

Look after yourselves and keep us updated, please. X

    1. Oh thanks so much everyone! It's lovely. We are totally fine, not even smokey, but took the advice to leave early. Everyone - National Parks, one of our neighbours, the local graziers, the Nature Conservation people, all said we did the right thing. In any case riding it out here is better than the stress(it was quite stressful last night just thinking about it especially when the wind whipped up for an hour or so after midnight and when there was dry strike on the horizon).

The weather is set for some relief tomorrow but then still days of very bad heat. We will review the situation tomorrow.

I hope that Gippsland is staying safe Nina!

  2. When I heard of the NSW fire warnings I did wonder if it was near you. Glad to hear you are safe, even if the poor zuccini was left behind (although I agree with Nina entirely).

I hope the property, zucchini included, remains safe and unaffected by the fires! All the best.

    1. Oh thanks so much Bek, I am not sure that Greenskin deserves the character restoration I am attempting - he sounds very cranky, doesn't he! And to have such an attitude to the padron!

We haven't 'lost' anything yet ( not even our sense of humour!) and may not, but it does make things very simple situations such as these. I did say to the Lad when he inquired, "what do you want from the house?", I said, "you, that's all, just you."

  3. Look after yourselves, thinking of you - glad to hear you've sought the safety of the big town. My parents who stayed to protect our the house during the Ash Wednesday fires of 1983 said that it was the most frightening thing they've ever done and that had they known there is no way they would have stayed (the fires front went through our property - they saved the hosue but it destroyed the garden - I hope greenskin shut his ears for that bit) I was in the closest town at the time on a sleepover at a school friends blissfully oblivious to the worst of it all.

    1. My thoughts exactly! Blissful is better than oblivion ( or at least smoke inhalation). We weren't directly threatened (or haven't been yet, the wind change will tell) but decided that the warnings were too strong and left home before 8.30am (a little after some of our 'tough' neighbours). Wagga Wagga Library is a wonderful - the place we spent the day - and their staff were so nice to me when they noticed the increasing phone calls and distress when we got a call from the neighbour about the possible threat.

I knew and loved the areas that got so burnt in Victoria in 2009 ( King Lake, The Christmas Hills, Dixon's Creek and all the rest) and was determined to learn a lesson from their horror.

It's not over yet - it looks set to still be problematic for a good while and for many other regions as well. Meantime the hotel Central Point in Wagga is very comfortable.

      Thanks for your warm support!

  4. Mr Greenskin, thank heavens you are still ok. I am sure Louise and the lad will return to give you a well earned drink when they can. Stay safe, fingers and toes are crossed for a successful and burn-less return

    1. Thanks Jen, Louise has spoken of you and your lovely boots. I am very thirsty and hot but ok for now. It seems that Louise hasn't inquired of me at all, where is her comment? Hmm, sometimes the kindness of strangers such as you Jen, is the only kindness one gets!
